Who Made my Ceramics? Meet Melissa of Derum Ceramic Design Studio

The best thing about running my own business is the creative freedom to create what I want, when I want… I get a huge self of accomplishment from reaching milestones that I’ve set myself, and celebrating them. – Lissy

I recently sat down with the other Team Leaders and we thought we should share a little bit more about what makes us tick and find out WHO is behind the brands….

…here’s some quick-fire questions I asked Lissy of Derum Ceramic Design Studio.

FAV podcast? I’m podcast obsessed! I love Myf and Zan Rowe’s Bang On, My Favourite Murder (although have taken a break due to it freaking me out and keeping me up at night), I am a Alexx Stuart’s Low Tox Life groupie, and also at the moment I’m having a FiveThirtyEight moment submerging myself in US politic.

Why do you hand make? I’ve always loved craft and making things myself, from scratch. I love the design process, creating something from nothing, an idea come to life.

Favourite thing about running your own business? The best thing about running my own business is the creative freedom to create what I want, when I want… I get a huge self of accomplishment from reaching milestones that I’ve set myself, and celebrating them.

Biggest inspiration? My biggest inspiration comes from the environment around me. Looking at people, places and spaces and how people use and interact with what’s around them.

Fav coffee shop in Sydney / or fav shop? Coffee Alchemy in the city and Against The Grind in Neutral Bay

Song that motivates you the most? My throwback nostalgic early 90s playlist always gets me motivated.

Best piece if advice you can give to other makers? Keep making and creating. Try to focus on your own work and don’t get side tracked by watching what people around you are doing or thinking of you.

Derum Ceramic Design Studio studio is based in Sydney, Australia. All of the studio’s works are made on site in our little studio using wheel throwing and hand building techniques. At the heart of the studio’s ethos is to make beautiful, functional objects that become part of your everyday life and ritual – bringing delight and pleasure in sight, touch and use.
